We are delighted that you have found our website and we invite you to share in any
of the activities of the Church. You will find a group of friendly and sincere people ready to welcome you.
Our building, located at the corner of Bronson Avenue and Lisgar Street, was erected in 1893,
five years after this congregation was organized in 1888. But McPhail Memorial is more than a building. It
is people who gather here to worship, study, pray, sing, fellowship and serve their Lord by helping others.
McPhail Memorial Baptist Church is people - people like you.
We gather on Sunday mornings at 10:30 a.m. A nursery is available for infants and toddlers and
Sunday school, for those three years of age and above, includes a Junior and a Youth Group. Communion, or the
Lord's Supper as it's also called, is celebrated on the first Sunday of every month. We believe the worship service
and warm fellowship will lift your spirit and strengthen your relationship with God. We look forward to meeting you.
Who We Strive To Be
An expression often used today is the phrase "A Church Home". We believe that
to meet the expectations and requirements of that description a church should be:
a place where people are accepted and welcomed as themselves and for themselves;
a place where friendship for people and devotion to God are two sides of the same coin; and
a place where people can feel they are being helped and encouraged, and where they can join to
help others.
Above all, it ought to be where God and people get together in such a way that God is worshipped and
people's lives are touched and renewed.
McPhail Memorial Baptist Church strives to be that kind of church.
Our Guiding Principles
We, the people of McPhail Memorial Baptist Church, recognize that there are
basic principles that determine who we are as a church and that form the basis for the ways in which we
work together in God's service.
We affirm this church as God's instrument in this community, and
in our lives. It belongs not to us, and our sense of purpose, but to God and God's will alone. We
affirm that God is at the centre of all we do, the focus of worship and authority, and the ultimate
source of strength and guidance for our mission and our ministry.
We commit to nurture and protect the children in our care, and
to maintain an environment that is safe and supportive for people of all ages.
"In Christ there is neither Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male nor
female" (Galatians 3:28). God's work is to be performed on the basis of each of our individual gifts
and the way in which God has called each of us, not on the basis of human position, power, race, age
or gender.
In keeping with our understanding of the leadership style of Christ
and the heritage of the Baptist Church, within this church all authority rests with the body of believers
gathered together to discern the will of God. Within the church, authority is given by this body. The
individuals, leaders and committees of the church are responsible to the people who are McPhail Memorial
Baptist Church.
Because individuals, leaders and committees of the church are
responsible to the people who are McPhail Memorial Baptist Church, they commit to continually engage
the people through consultation, prayer and dialogue in such ways as to act on their behalf, as they
strive to understand and carry out the will of God for McPhail.
The work and activities of the church do not rest with any one group
or person. The people who are McPhail Memorial Baptist Church share the responsibility for contributing
their talents and resources to all aspects of church life, ministry and work.
We commit to listen and seek to understand and accept each other and
to look for the wisdom in the words of others. We believe that problems are resolved not through silence,
but when we share our own thoughts and opinions in an open, honest and caring manner.
